dopo varie peripezie e tentativi siamo arrivati a circoscrivere un pò il problema, strano a dirsi pare che sia legato all'installazione dei driver proprietari ATI.

se si imposta una risoluzione video a 1280x1024 non ci sono problemi, il gestore dei font si avvia e opera correttamente così come l'ati control panel, il problema si evidenzia quando si passa ad una risoluzione minore 1024x768 a questo punto si riscontra il problema descritto nel primo post con l'aggiunta del mancato avvio del control panel ati.

per ripristinare il tutto non basta ripristinare la risoluzione precedente, occorre brutalmente cancellare le directory .gconf

ho controllato xorg.conf in lungo ed in largo ma non ho scorto errori, evidentemente mi sfugge qualcosa, lo posto nell'eventualità di un aiuto.
