Christopher Buckley's Boomsday is based on a wickedly funny idea. With an estimated 77 million baby boomers looking at retirement, the bottom could fall out of the Social Security system. One solution would be a mass suicide of old boomers, thereby relieving the tax burden on younger generations.

When Social Security began, we are reminded, there were 15 workers to support one retiree; now the ratio is about 3-to-1, and it appears heading toward 2-to-1. "You can run from that kind of math," Cassandra says, "but you can't hide. It means that someone my age will have to spend their entire life paying unfair taxes."
