in genere questo tipo di problema si verifica o quando l'hard disk è arrivato alla fine dei suoi giorni o per incompatibilità tra il modulo di gestione SATA di linux e il chipset

il punto è che inserendo il CD funziona e questo indica un incasinamento tra i bus SATA e PATA

alcuni consigliano ti riconfigurare il kernel con l'opzione ide-legacy abilitata, il che ovviamente costringerà a cambiare tutto visto che tutti i device /dev/sd diventano /dev/hd

sarebbe interessante saper che chipset SATA usa il tuo computer, postaci l'output di lspci
Il disco è nuovo, o almeno dovrebbe esserlo visto che il portatile l'ho comprato ad agosto e a novembre l'ho mandato in assistenza dove mi hanno cambiato (o così mi han detto) scheda madre e disco fisso. Spero quindi che non sia un problema del disco! Ad ogni modo, SMART sembra non segnalare nulla di grave.

La soluzione che suggerisci (ide-legacy) l'avevo già letta in qualche forum: in alcuni casi ha risolto in altri no. Io non ho voluto rischiare e quindi non ho provato.
