Router-Ethernet configuration Hell

Hello,
I have windows xp sp2, I always surfed the internet with my old dial up
modem that connects only one pc to the internet,

but now I bought this new router (sitecom wl-322) wich is also a modem -
and I connected it through an ethernet cable to the ethernet card in my pc,
(I also connected the phone line cable to the plug for it in this router and
I connected everything as it should be)

now I have this "Local area connection", (corresponding to the ethernet card, and corresponding to my new router)
which is apparently working, because in its staus it says: "connected".

But strangely Firefox, Outlook Express, Skype, and all the programs that usually access the internet do not seem to find this new router connection, they won't connect through it when it is switched on, and I can't surf.

When I plug in my old modem again and switch on its connection, Firefox (and all the others) starts surfing again: it sees the old connection.

It is the new router connection which is not found by the programs...
it is a different type of connection, a "local area connection" I find it different from the normal Dial up connection.


so basically the connection for the router is there,
but my browser - and all the other programs - do not access it.
they do not seem to see this new LAN connection.

is it something to do with the operating system? or with the configuration of LAN connections?
I'm really going through hell with setting up this router.

You have to configure the router to get the right access to internet.
Go into its first page (using internet explorer with the bar address usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
Then input your login data for internet (user id, password) where it is requested.

With a router, it is always the router which is connected to internet (24/24) and share this connection with the pcs. You need a flat internet agreement.
