ATI Mobility Radeon X700 videochip not supported

When we finally got the graphics started we found out that the X700 was not recognized, and in fact it was not listed as an option when setting up the display. Only VESA display was supported up to 800*600. Again many solutions were reported in Fedoraforum, but the one that worked for me was running the latest ATI-provided driver installation Shell script (in my case “ati-driver-installer-8.16.20-i386.run”), available through www.ati.com. The end result was a 1280*800 desktop, plus options for lower resolutions as well. 3D support also worked well (try the “Atlantis” screen saver!). The ATI-provided RPM packages didn’t work for me. I did not test the connection of an external monitor to the laptop. A word of caution: go for the “X” settings rather than the “Gnome” settings whenever the X startup asks for this after driver installation, or else you will end up with 1024*768 as maximum resolution. The standard FC4 RPM “compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-47.fc4.i386.rpm” is required in case you are interested in running the “ATI Control” X application.

Make sure you do a fresh driver install after loading a new kernel version, as you will lose 3D support otherwise. In such cases there is no need to re-create the “xorg.conf” file by running “fglrxconfig”! The same procedure applies in case you inadvertently end up with 1024*768 as maximum resolution: try re-installing the driver.
