Best screen size for web site.

Hello!

What would you say is the best screen size of a website. I've just started on a new one, but i know it wont fit on most monitors. Mine is set to 1280 x 960 which makes it hard to judge on smaller resolution. I hate changing it as is messes with my icons .

So, what's a good size to use in this age? VVoVe:

it's weird, to say the least, that an american web designer posts on italian forums..

btw, it's not so smart to set a resolution without considering the target of your site.
I often try to follow this steps:
- amount of contents
- target
- type of site

I wouldn't exceed a resolution higher than 1024 X 768 (which doesn't mean the size of your pages..)

ps. may i ask you what state you are from in the US?
