è xchè tenti di avviarlo coi permessi errati, prova con mysqld_safe --user=mysql &

Quello potrebbe essere un motivo, in ogni caso sotto /var/lib/mysql *dovresti* avere un file .err con i log degli errori. Ciao

Sembra che non esista il db degli utenti. Prova a lanciare mysql_install_db. Controlla anche i permessi, la directory dei db (/var/lib/mysql) deve avere come owner l'utente mysql (chown -R mysql /var/lib/mysql).
