$result = mysql_query($query, $db);
	$i=0;
	while ($sql_data = mysql_fetch_row($result)) {
	$a_array[$i] = $sql_data;
	$i++;
	}

Se non erro i campi delle due clausole select di una union devono essere dello stesso tipo.
Nel tuo caso occorrerebbe un inner join.
