problema con $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER']

dunque,
sto facendo un sw per lo sviluppo di log in una pagina web (tracciamento degli utenti sul sito Attivo), ma il seguente codice non funziona:
echo $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'];

come mai?

se provengo da una< pagina non mi stampa il referrer...?
avete anche voi problemi?

Cito il manuale

The address of the page (if any) which referred the user agent to the current page. "This is set by the user agent". Not all user agents will set this, and some provide the ability to modify HTTP_REFERER as a feature. In short, it cannot really be trusted.

Quindi potrebbe essere il browser a non settarlo.
