Ciao,
avendo il primo dei 2 dvd di installazione della Sarge (talmente vecchio che Sarge era ancora in testing), ho deciso di provare a installare il sistema via rete.
Tutto ok, l'installazione va a buon fine, scarica ed installa tutti i pacchetti senza problemi anche se, dopo aver selezionato "Ambiente Desktop" con tasksel, mi ritrovo solo con twm, senza gnome, kde o altri.
Poco male, ne approfitto per installare fluxbox e vedere un po' com'è fatta. E fin qui tutto ok, non c'è alcun problema.
Quindi decido di dare un
apt-get install gnome kde
e anche qui tutto ok. Successivamente, riavvio e il server x decide che non vuole più funzionare.

Ho provato, dopo una ricerca sul forum, ad utilizzare i vesa, ad impostare la profondità del colore a 16 bit, ad utilizzare una risoluzione e un refresh rate minore, nonostante questo monitor avesse supportato egregiamente anche un 1280*1024 @ 65Mhz, 24 bit e driver ATI sempre su una debian con xorg.
Interessante è che appena avvio il sistema, gdm tenta subito di partire e mi chiede se voglio vedere l'output dell'errore. Qui sembra che la tastiera sia completamente impazzita. Ctrl + alt + f1 non fa assolutamente nulla, nè tantomeno le frecce o invio mi consentono di fare la mia scelta. Sono riuscito però, premendo "D", a dire di sì a tutte le domande e poi magicamente ctrl alt f1 è tornato a funzionare.
Cosa posso fare? Perchè non mi installa gnome quando seleziono "ambiente desktop" (debian.fastweb.it/testing/ main)?
E se proprio devo dargli un apt-get separato, c'è un modo per installare solo quello che serve realmente a gnome (ad esempio non capisco perchè mi dovrebbe installare abiword automaticamente)?
Su questo aspetto sono un po' confuso, visto che ci sono decine e decine di gnome-panel, gnome-***...
