errore if else

scusatemi se vi sembra stupida la domanda ma sono parecchio arruginito col php.. se io scrivo:

if ($id==1) $item='aaa'
else if ($id==2) $item='bbb'
else if ($id==3) $item='ccc'; 

con questo codice la pagina resta bianca, se commento queste linee funziona, cos'ho sbagliato? Il punto e virgola non va solo alla fine?

si, alla fine di una istruzione. Le assegnazioni a $item sono istruzioni.

e quindi è corretto? mah.. commentandolo però vedo il resto della pagina, altrimenti vedo tutto bianco..

Il punto e virgola va alla fine di ogni dichiarazione.
Poi utilizza le parentesi, in modo da evitare di commettere errori e di rendere inoltre il codice più chiaro

{
    $item='aaa';    
}
    else if 
    {
        ($id==2) $item='bbb';    
    }
    else if ($id==3) $item='ccc';
    {
         ($id==3) $item='ccc';
    }

Se avendo inserito il punto e virgola come ti è stato detto constati ancora un comportamento inaspettato, meglio che posti tutta la pagina

questa è la parte in php, poi il resto è html con 2,3 echo che stampano le variabili di cui sopra, ma lì non ci possono essere errori.. se commento tutto il blocco di cui sopra funziona, altrimenti pagina bianca..
