Child selector e table/tr

Dato questo semplice HTML come esempio:

  <tr>
    <td>cella 1</td>
    <td>cella 2</td>
  </tr>
</table>

Perche' questo CSS funziona:

table tr {
  background-color: #0ff;
}

e questo no:

table>tr {
  background-color: #0ff;
}

:master: :master: :master:

Voglio dire, quei tag TR sono figli diretti di TABLE, perche' non funziona col child selector ">" ???

Il bello e' che se invece uso:

tr>td {
  background-color: #0ff;
}

tutto funziona... ma perche' con TABLE e TR no???

The DOM shows a tbody element between table and tr, so even though it's not coded that way all the browsers insert it.
